Godwin Champs Namuyimba

Masaka, Uganda 1989

Known for his striking, detailed portraits, Ugandan artist Godwin Champs Namuyimba uses the human form to explore identity, race, and individuality in the context of postcolonial Africa as told from the perspective of a young contemporary artist working in Uganda today. Drawing inspiration from everyday life, Namuyimba depicts family, friends, and acquaintances in relaxed settings, often surrounded by symbols of domesticity and cultural signifiers. With a vivid palette, his portraits are filled with arresting insight and humanity. Through his work Namuyimba aims to challenge and critique stereotypical Western depictions of Black people.

Born in Masaka, Uganda in 1989, Namuyimba earned his BFA from Kyambogo University in Kampala in 2017. Since 2019, Namuyimba has exhibited internationally in multiple cities including Stockholm, New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, and Brussels. In recent years, paintings by Namuyimba have regularly outperformed estimates at auction. He currently lives and works in Entebbe, Uganda.
